Reflection 05 · Calling & Action
Greatness starts with service.
The story
Matthew 20 opens with a landowner hiring workers at different times of day, then paying each the agreed daily wage. Those who worked longest object to his generosity toward the others. Later in the chapter, a request for places of honor brings another question of rank into view. Jesus tells His disciples that greatness among them means serving others. He points to His own mission: serving and giving His life for many.
Why it matters
Jesus challenges both comparison and the desire to control. His authority is directed toward salvation, and His death on the cross shows the depth of His service. Humility begins with recognizing that our position does not make us more deserving of God’s generosity.
We bring this into leadership by serving before seeking a larger title or responsibility. That is a way to follow Jesus, not a bargain that guarantees promotion. Earthly wealth and power cannot carry the weight of eternity. What matters is whether we use what has been entrusted to us to care for others.
Try this week
- Where are you comparing your recognition or rewards with someone else’s?
- What task would help your team or community, even if it brought you no credit?
- How can you use one responsibility you already have to serve someone this week?
I will serve ______ by ______, without making ______ the measure of my worth.
