Reflection 03 · Foundation & Calling

What comes first shapes everything else.

The story

Jesus speaks about everyday concerns like food and clothing. He points to birds and flowers as reminders of the Father’s care, then calls His followers to seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first. He closes by directing their attention to today rather than carrying tomorrow’s worries in advance.

Why it matters

What comes first influences what we pursue and how we pursue it. Approval, achievement, and fear can each pull our decisions in a different direction.

Putting Jesus first gives our responsibilities a foundation. We still prepare, work, and make difficult choices, but we consider what honors God as we choose our next step. This passage speaks to daily needs and trust in the Father; it is not a promise of wealth, effortless success, or a trouble-free week.

Try this week

  1. Look at your calendar and recent decisions. What has been getting first place?
  2. Where is concern about tomorrow distracting you from a responsibility in front of you today?
  3. What specific choice this week would reflect seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness first?
Choose one priority for your week:

I will put ______ first by ______, and bring my concern about ______ to God in prayer.
