Courage 04 · Calling
Witold Pilecki
Bring the truth out.
In September 1940, Polish resistance member Witold Pilecki deliberately allowed German forces to arrest him so he could enter Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp.
His mission was to learn what was happening inside, organize resistance, and get information to people outside.
Inside the camp, Pilecki helped build a secret network and send reports through underground channels. In April 1943, he escaped. He continued documenting what he had witnessed.
After the war, Poland’s communist authorities executed him in 1948.
His story carries a terrible cost. It also shows someone taking responsibility for work he believed needed to be done, even when he could not control whether others would respond.
The Lesson
When truth needs action, take responsibility for the part you can carry.
Pilecki’s circumstances were extraordinary. His example asks something practical of us: learn the facts, speak honestly, and take a responsible step when someone needs help.
Reflection
Where do you see a need that deserves action, and what informed, responsible step can you take this week?
