Run It Back 02 · Action & Impact

Tom Brady

Be ready before your name is called.

The pursuit

In the 2000 NFL Draft, 198 players were selected before Tom Brady. New England finally picked him in the sixth round, at No. 199.

His place on the draft board gave him a starting point. What happened next still required work.

Before Brady became a household name, he was a backup preparing for a job he did not yet hold. Reporting from his second season describes a stronger player who had improved his command of the offense and performed consistently in practice. His teammates and coaches saw the progress before most fans did.

In September 2001, starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe suffered a serious injury. Brady stepped in. Later that season, even after Bledsoe was cleared to return, coach Bill Belichick kept Brady as the starter.

The opportunity was unexpected. The preparation was already underway.

What it produced

Brady helped New England win the Super Bowl that season. He eventually finished his career with seven Super Bowl championships, a record for a player, and a résumé that put him at the center of the “greatest of all time” conversation.

What it revealed

But the part worth running back happened before the championships: he kept developing while someone else held the position he wanted.

The Lesson
Prepare for opportunities. Take action to create them.

You cannot always control when a door opens, but you can build skills, start conversations, ask for responsibility, and show what you can contribute.

Being overlooked can hurt. It does not have to leave you standing still. Keep developing, and take a deliberate step toward the work you want to do.

For us, the foundation remains Jesus Christ. Recognition can change. Our worth in Him does not. We can pursue excellence without asking the outcome to tell us who we are.

Run it back

What opportunity do you want to create, and what step will you take this week to move it forward?

Make the introduction. Ask for the responsibility. Share your work. Choose one action and put it on your calendar.
